Introduction to Gender Reassignment
Transsexual / Gender Dysphoria patients suffer from
a long lasting, continuous discomfort with their gender with a desire
to live as a member of the opposite sex. They have a strong wish
to be rid of their external genitalia and alter their appearance
to fit their chosen gender. For many patients this has been a life
long desire and this has led to significant psychological stress.
Hence, long term Psychiatric support is required and mandatory
for patients seeking Gender Reassignment Surgery (GRS). Thus the
guidelines set down by the Harry
Benjamin Dysphoria Association and American Psychiatric Association
for the management of Transsexual / Gender dysphoria patients are
followed.
Prior to surgery for Gender Reassignment patients must demonstrate;
1. A persistent wish for at least 2 years to change gender,
2. A psychiatric assessment over a period of at least 2 years.
3. Demonstrate the ability to live adequately in their chosen gender
role for at least 1 year.
I hope that you will find the information presented here clear
and useful in preparing yourself for a consultation with your surgeon
and enable you to make an informed decision.
It is very important in all surgery to fully understand the benefits
of a procedure as well as the possible side effects and complications
and how these may affect you.
This information is presented as an outline of the various options
and cannot in anyway be considered exhaustive. I do try to detail
the possible side effects and risks as far as possible, but there
may be others that have been reported for a specific procedure.
There are numerous variations in the technical details of any procedure
and all may give excellent results. It is necessary to recognise
that these do not constitute deviation in normal or accepted standards
of care.
All surgery would be at the London
Bridge Hospital.
