BOTOX
INTRODUCTION:
BOTOX is a purified preparation of botulinum toxin Type A, obtained from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.
USE
In the treatment of dynamic facial lines; e.g., frown lines, laughter lines, and the neck.
ACTION
BOTOX (Botulinum Toxin) causes a temporary paralysis of the treated facial muscles and this allows the lines to soften over a few weeks to months. The onset of action is 3 to 5 days after injection and the paralysis usually lasts for approximately 3 months. Repeat injections lead to gradual weakening of the muscles.
TREATMENT
Clinic procedure. Fine needle injections into the muscles of the affected areas. Topical local anaesthetic cream can be applied 45min before treatment reduces the pain of the injections. Cooling with ice packs also reduces the discomfort.
EFFECTS
Mild burning sensation with injection.
Tingling sensation may be felt for 2 -3 days.
Minimal bruising may occur.
Rarely, weakness of nearby muscles if BOTOX spreads unexpectedly.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Pregnancy or breast feeding.
Allergy to BOTOX.
Disorder of muscle activity
Avoid if taking certain antibiotics. Inform your doctor.
